There is great debate amongst Bible scholars whether or not animals will go to heaven. Questions arise whether or not animals and pets have a “spirit”, and whether or not animals have a “soul”. The main question I was recently asked is whether or not we will be reunited with our beloved pets in heaven. To that last question I say, “YES!”
I have lost several of my fur- babies over my lifetime. I miss each and every one of them. They were part of my family and I mourned their loss when they died. In Genesis 1:2 the Spirit of God is “hovering over the waters” (Ruach Elohim –Hebrew) This Hebrew word: Ruach is translated “breath of life” and Genesis 8:1 uses ruach to describe the “wind” God sent over the earth to recede the flood waters. Altogether the word ruach is used almost 400 times in the Old Testament. All living creatures owe the “breath of life” to God. (Job 27:3).
There is no doubt in my mind that God breathed life into my precious pets, as He has breathed life into me and into all living creatures. There are also several scripture passages that make me believe that ALL creatures are loved by God and He has plans for His children and the lesser creatures to enjoy His eternal Kingdom together. Psalm 145: 9-10; 13; 15-21.
Still the question remains whether or not animals have souls. In order to answer that question we must understand that animals were put under the dominion of man and did not have that free choice to repent of sin and be “saved” as we humans understand salvation. The Christian concept of heaven is inextricably linked with the concepts of salvation, redemption, and resurrection. The Bible is clear that redemption is necessary for human beings because we are “fallen” beings. Humans have free will and thus have the ability to sin or not to sin. Humans may choose salvation (to accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour) or reject Him. Animals, however, have never “fallen”, therefore redemption is not necessary for animals. Animals cannot choose between good and evil (to sin or not to sin). When animals behave badly, it is generally because of a conflict between their God-given natures and our human requirements. If there is no justification, sanctification or redemption for animals does that mean there is no glorification? I believe there is if I read Romans 8:19 -21 correctly. “For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hopethat the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God”.
I also believe because animals do not “choose” to sin that ALL animals will go to heaven, even the naughty ones who by their very nature may misbehave badly – at least according to our human standards of what constitutes poor pet behaviour. Animals act instinctively and cannot be faulted if they bite, scratch or even kill because of their nature to survive. As pet owners, we must be responsible to raise our pets “in the way they should go”, by providing for their needs and giving them the love and care, so they are never abused or neglected. WE will be judged by our treatment of them, not vice versa!
So, I suppose the ultimate question is not whether or not your pet goes to heaven, but whether or not YOU DO! This whole debate is moot otherwise. If you are doubtful about YOUR eternal life read: The Gospel Message: Get it? Got it? Good!!
I am praying that I will be welcomed into the presence of my Saviour at the end of my lifetime, and that He will say, “Well done, good and faithful Servant…come into your reward…” (Matthew 25:23) Then I hope to see running to greet me all my loved ones including my purring and barking fur-babies, all clambering to give me hugs and kisses…each in their own way!
Here are more encouraging scriptures for those who love, have loved and lost a precious pet:
Psalm 36:6 “Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; your judgments are like the great deep; man and beast you save, O Lord.”
Genesis 1:30 “And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.”
Genesis 6:19-22 “You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you. Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept live. You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.” Noah did everything just as God commanded him.”
Revelation 4:11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”
Job 12:7-10 “But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this?
In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.”
Genesis 9:8-17 “Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: “I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after youand with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth.I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.” And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come:I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds,I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Revelation 5: 13 “Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!”
Matthew 10:29 “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.“Ecclesiastes 3:18-21 “I also said to myself, “As for humans, God tests them so that they may see that they are like the animals. Surely the fate of human beings is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath; humans have no advantage over animals. Everything is meaningless.All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return.Who knows if the human spirit rises upward and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?”
Psalms 50:10-11 “for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine.”
Hosea 2:18-20 “In that day I will make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky and the creatures that move along the ground. Bow and sword and battle I will abolish from the land, so that all may lie down in safety. I will betroth you to me forever; I will betroth you in righteousness and justice, in love and compassion. I will betroth you in faithfulness, and you will acknowledge the Lord.”

2 Samuel 12: 1-6 “The Lord sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said, “There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor. I had to let my sweet dog Molly go yesterday due to severe illness. My heart is broken. My house is so quiet without her. I miss my baby so much. I just don’t know what to do. I can sleep and just wishing she was still here thought I know I did the right thing. I need your prayers. Thank you for the verses. I too believe they go to heaven.
Had to let go of my best little buddy Buttons. My little dog was almost 14 and was tired. She was with me through a divorce from a 31 year marriage and never left my side. As a man I’m supposed to be strong but my little girl broke my heart. I do plan on seeing her soon in Heaven. God Bless you all Jesus is coming soon🙏
Awe man. I put my cat down last July and it was devastating. So much that I took a 6 month vacation to Mexico. I ended up getting my residency down here and will leave USA cause of the mess Biden has put us in. Be strong time will heal ya. I think of my little buddy everyday and know he’s waiting for me.
Praise God He helped me come across your page. Thank you for the Scriptures they’re great comfort now. We had to have our kitty Chip put down last night because of her critical cardiac condition. We didn’t let her suffer. She went downhill quickly in couple days. I wish there were good findings and treatment for her at earlier stage. My heart’s hurt so bad when I walk by her bed on my front hallway where she loved to sleep. My other 3 kitties sounded quiet than usual. I felt they could sense of something going on with Chip. I pray the Lord have mercy giving my kitty Chip and all the pets a better place until we meet again. Thank you for letting me share. God bless you and May He comfort all who lost their loved pets.

I had to put down my little Zeke today, I am just beside myself and just don’t know how to carry on. His toys, blankets , beds are all here in the room with me and I cant even bear the thought of moving them.
Mine died 9 weeks ago today and I haven’t moved his food, water dish or his kitty litter box. Everything is the same as he left it. I still cry every single day thinking about my little buddy.
Hopefully we will see them again someday. So sorry for your loss.
I am so very sorry for your loss. When my little Samson passed, we sadly packed up his belongings and donated everything to the local animal shelter. We kept his collar and tags and got a casting done of one of his paw prints that we keep near his picture.
We just lost our beautiful boy, Fudge last night. He was run over and we had to have him put down. I feel sick to my stomach at how we lost him. I’m trying to remain in His arms because I need comfort. Thank you for the verses.

Had to my 18 year old cat down a few hours ago and feel broken hearted. I keep expecting him to jump on the bed and want to snuggle. Unfortunately he was my life. I’ve never been married and I have no kids. He literally was everything I had. My only hope is that someday we will reunite in heaven. Please pray for me. I’m dying inside right now.

This is a lovely site and so helpful for so many people. I pray for all of you who have lost your beloved pets. It does get better. We lost our two dogs, Boone and Abby, within 2 weeks of each other when they were both twelve. It’s been almost 5 years and I still think of them everyday but with much less acute sadness. There are some great books on the topic by Christian authors such as Gary Kurz. He helped my husband and I get through the loss of our dogs with many emails exchanged. I wish I had found this site back then, but it’s a comfort now too. Praise God for His wonderful creation and His love for all living things.

I thank you Lynn, from the bottom of my heart for posting this bible information about our pets going to heaven. My 15-year-old Maine Coon cat is not doing well today and has pretty much not been interested in eating or drinking fluids, I am very sad and stressed as to where we are going with this. I hope the good Lord helps him recover and spend more time with us. Our 2 cats have become our babies since we have not seen our son or granddaughter in 10 1/2 years. My only peace comes from the fact that he will go to be with the Lord and not just die. I want so much to see all my beloved pets when the good Lord takes me home. My aunt Annie passed away yesterday morning at 3:10 and my sweet dog, Reagan Jane passed away in my arms last night at 8pm. Today was her 9th birthday. This has been the hardest day for me. Thank you for sharing the scriptures.

This is to every person who posted something about the loss of their pet. My toy chihuahua Moses passed away last June 4 days before I was scheduled to have surgery. It was totally devastating to me because he was my best friend and he reminded me of a small child. The only comfort that I could get the day it happened was to pray to God. I prayed that God would please give me a sign that Moses was okay. I did not care what kind of sign it was but I believed as I was praying that it would happen. The next morning as me and my husband were talking in the living room, we heard the sound of Moses voice and we were shocked. My husband’s face had went pale like he had saw a ghost. Moses had let us know he was okay by barking 2 times!! I would hear him again a week later and this time it sounded like it was in the bedroom! My dog was not only still alive in spirit but God was letting me know that Moses was truly okay! For all you people that are hurting, God will do the same for you! Remember people the bible scripture that says, ” With God all things are possible.” God bless you all!!
A couple nights ago I lost my beloved kitty, Sassy. She was about 12 years old, and I’d had her since I was 8. We don’t know what exactly caused her to die, but she’d slowly been getting frailer over the last few months. On Monday, she just went from ‘fine’ to deathly ill in a matter of hours, and when we took her to the vet, we made the choice to put her down so she wouldn’t suffer anymore.
I already miss my sweet girl dearly, but I really want to believe that God has a special place for her with Him. For now, I’m going to focus on being grateful that God blessed me with such a special kitty to love for all those years, and remember her fondly. I want to remember her and smile, not fixate on how she was in death.
Thank you for letting me share. I’m hurting a lot right now, but I have faith that God will help me through this. Prayers for all here who are also grieving!

First, so sorry you lost Sassy. You leave a comforting message as your situation is very similar to mine except my sweet girl kitty Loki died at home after the new medicine did not have time to get her back to vibrant health. Thinking of all the good years of love. Such a blessing, but sad missing her very much.

My precious pup passed away yesterday. His name was Kasper and he just turned 12 years old. We will miss Kasper so much, but I know he is in Heaven. God gave him life and he blessed us with so many memories. He got diagnosed 1 week ago and he left us naturally 6 days later. I prayed that God would ease his pain and be with him. I know he was with him. Kasper, one day we will meet again, I love you. Thank you for these scriptures. greif is hard but we have Christ’s ever lasting love to comfort us. We are assured that our fur-babies are in heaven with our creator.

We just lost our Veiled Chameleon this afternoon, at the age of four years and two months. Fairly old for a chameleon, but that didn’t make his passing any less devastating. This page is a comfort, as are all the scriptural verses that speak of God’s love for his creations. Since a very young age, I had always believed that animals went to heaven.
We had to put down my precious dog, Abby on Saturday April 4th. I got her when she was 6 weeks old and she was 17. My heart is aching for her, just to hold her one more time. I didn’t want her to go like that, but she was in so much pain and discomfort. Please keep me in your prayers as I feel like a part of my heart has been ripped out.

I lost my Vizsla at 2pm today. She was only 9 years old. She had a mass on her spleen and she was bleeding out. We decided to euthanize her vs surgery and chemo for maybe 3 or 4 mo of life. She was our baby and the sweetest loving dog that was by our side most of the time. She had been active and healthy just the day before her diagnosis so we were in shock to find out she was so ill. As I came home this afternoon I noticed a chair in the yard outside where I had been playing ball with her last night and remembered the long walk through a beautiful garden as she smiled the whole time. I didn’t want to eat I warmed up some left over pizza then remembered that Roxy always ate the crust of the pizza once I was finished. All these wonderful memories are just in my head now and no longer a reality. Even though I really didn’t feel like it I prayed a thanksgiving to Jesus for giving me 9 years of love for this precious dog with so much in love from her. I am in so much pain tonight and can’t sleep while my husband is hugging Roxy’s baby lamb that she loved. Please pray for us.

SHE WAS ALWAYS WANTING TO EAT MY FOOD. I MISS HER LIKE CRAZY.

If our Osca can’t be with us any longer I am grateful he is with the one who made him. We are grateful for the gift of his life that we were given for a time.
These verses and other replies have helped me so much. We lost our sweet “Jersey(Dobie)” yesterday at only 8 years old. My heart is broken but I have faith that I’ll see her again at Heavens Gate. Our other dobie is 2 and is looking all over for her. I truly wish I was the type of person that my dogs think that I am. I loved her soooo much. Thank you.

I’ve been looking into pet loss things myself, I lost my Romeo(puggle) March 3, 2019. so sweet, we rescued him at 8, 4 yrs wasn’t enough with him, but I won’t question God. I”m trying hard to have faith and trust God’s will in all of this. Your dogs love you unconditionally, and accept you for who you are not matter what, that’s what makes it hard. They make us better.
I have always known all creatures created by GOD ‘ are very unique and are his greatest creation’s!
i believe that whth all my heart , not to say there are not alot of great people ! think about it ” we humans mostly look and have the same shape , move and talk pretty much in the same manner , as for all of GODS creatures the Number of species on Earth tagged at 8.7 million. Most precise estimate yet suggests more than 80% of species still undiscovered. There are 8.7 million eukaryotic species on our planet — give or take 1.3 million ” do you relise how wonderful that is ? do you also know how important all of them are to GOD ? well that should be crystal clear to everyone by what he had noah do , it is to me ! just know that all creatures GOD had created were for a reason and they all will be whth us in the new world ‘ especialy our pets we so dearly love that we raised and are such a big part of our lives ! please know we will be reunited whth then one day ! and keep talking to them that have moved on to paradise for they can still hear us and feel our tears of love we shed for them ‘ they await, each and everyone of them for our return , i just know they do ! until we meet again at the rainbow bridge that connects earth and paradise ,i love and miss you so much punchy and ava………………T
I’m working on a devotion for work on loss as last year had a few too many for me. I lost my Mama kitty after almost 12 years. She was a ‘hoard’ cat of 100+. When I got her from the rescue she had no teeth or hair, but what a VOICE. I miss that VOICE. I miss the cuddles. But this gives me Hope that I WILL see her once again. Great article that I will use some of the verses in my devotion. Thank you.
Thank you for this article. Our beloved dog Grace died this afternoon and I’ve been struggling a lot with it. I had her 12 years and couldn’t have asked for a better, sweeter dog. Imagining her at the pearly gates with her tail wagging, able to see and hear again and without pain is such a comforting thought and even though it will probably be a long time from now, it’s something I now look forward to in heaven.

Our cat, Cleo, who left her mommy to live with us 05/08/2001, left us Monday afternoon while I was holding her. Lynn Dove, the Lord is using you in a mighty way to bring comfort to His children in their grieving and I thank Him for you. I am sharing on Facebook because this is a wonderful site that we who have put our trust in Him need to read for the comfort only He can give and that we can share with others grieving the loss of pets.
Thank you so, so very much for giving me such comfort that I have searched for since October 31st, 2018 when losing my best friend, most humanistic, sweetest pet on God’s green earth. Beautiful, Jesus said: My Father God knows all things, even when a small sparrow falls to earth. WE are told that everything, all things that make us happy will be there in Heaven. If I am allowed to enter heaven, then the greatest thing that will make me happy will be meeting Jesus and my family and friends . My family includes my kitty cats Tiger, Puff. Shadrack, Sholo, Smokey, Bandit, Shiloh, Satin, Snowball, Tabitha, Sassy, Sacha, Samuel, and Joshua, Joshua. Joshua was born on July 4th, 2010. His Spirit left us on November 1st, 2018, Al Souls Day. He was never sick, even for a day, until October 31st. Sammycat has been with us since February, 2006. He and Joshua were great buddies…playing, eating, sleeping. He has been looking for Joshua for the last few days, calling out for him. The Vet says that Sammy will probably be mourning in his own way for the next few weeks. As for me, my heart is broken and scarred by Joshua’s loss. But I truly believe that Joshua is with my Lord and Shepard Jesus and if it is God’s Will, then I will see him again. May God’s Will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven that my home and faith that I will see them all.

@leo…having my dogs and animals with me ‘is absolutely’ what it takes….I believe our Lord and Savior would not deny us that love…after my Cairn passed over…I could still hear the pet door at night as if he was still going outside and coming back inside…We will absolutely be with our beloved pets on the other side.

Very inspiring post and reading those verses is a big help to me to the pet loss grieving. After the pet cremation in Houston, we decided to offer a mass for our pet dog, and we’re praying to help us to surpass the grieving stage and make us happy again.
Very comforting, as I am expecting to lose my kitty tomorrow. I don’t want her to suffer. We have all had such unconditional love, and enriched lives from the tremendous and precious blessing of having a pet.
I type this as I prepare to make the trip to euthanize my 14-year-old Red Healer (Red). Don’t ask me how, but he let me know he was ready a few weeks back. I selfishly tried EVERYTHING imaginable, with the help of my vet, to keep his QUALITY CARE my priority. After many tears and much prayer, I made the arrangements 2 days ago and prepared. I was able to give him a sedative and hold him until he went to sleep in my arms. Well, it’s that time. Thanks for those who shared their interpretations on scripture as it help me to view in different perspectives – those of hope that of our Saviour Christ Jesus’ LOVE. Proverbs 12:10 – “A righteous man has kind regard for the life of his animal,
But even the compassion of the wicked is cruel.”

I am feeling your pain so much…We have to put our Trixy to sleep later today ..the same way..Hospice for Pets will administer a sedative before also. I pray for strength..We will miss her terribly..Please pray for us to say good-bye and be able to let her return to Our Lord who gave her to us 17 years ago.
We lost our Ginger on Monday, a beautiful golden retriever, 12 years and two days old. I have been having a really difficult time trying to get through these days without her. Your words bring comfort to my broken heart. Thank you so much.
Praise Jesus for leading me to your uplifting message. I too believe our pets, all animals will be in heaven. Today, July 30th 2018 our beloved Gully crossed over the rainbow bridge at 9.00am. He was 11 and had cancer in his face which rapidly spread to most of his head.
He was such a handsome boy, with the brightest blue eyes (husky/bordercollie mix) got him from the shelter at 9 weeks old. He was so loyal and loving, and never once complained. His wife Nell, thats what we call her, his wifey, our Shepherd, 9 and their two daughters, Millie and Lexi are mourning his loss too.
I have absolutely no doubt, Gully will be there to greet my family when God calls us home. I praise, honour and glorify You Father for the gifts of our fur babies.

The phrase or name “Ruach Elohim” is actually Hebrew, not Greek.

My family laid to rest their beloved Schnauzer, “Jake,” yesterday. It is very sad for all of us. He was a great joy. Your inspirational verses above are so uplifting and healing. I know that God truly directed you to share this message with all of us. Our pets love us unconditionally, just as God does. When we lose them our hearts break, and for a while we feel that we are in a bleak place. Your words and scripture above give us hope that there is so much more in the future and we may even get to experience our beloved fury and feathered friends again. Thank u so much for this article… We just lost our beloved dog of 13 yrs early yesterday morning. He was our border collie/rottie mix rescue we rescued right before we got married. He was appx 2 yrs old when we got him and had him for over 13 yrs. We miss him so very much. I have visions from time to time that God has blessed me with such a gift. Anyway I had this vision of my furbaby that just passed, named Diego, along with my other dog and cat who passed a few yrs ago and they were all very young and seemed to be smiling looking at me and behind them was just GORGEOUS colors so vibrant I can’t even describe them! And the land was full of trees and meadows as far as the eye could see it was stunning!!! Heaven I’m sure. Anyway that help ease my aching and shattered heart. And I KNOW animals go to Heaven, always have. Its not the first time ive had these visions of my pets in Heaven, or even human loved ones that have passed… Again thank in for this article!!!!!

God’s timing Lynn. My parents put their dog down today as a result of a stroke. She was 15. Their baby. I am so thankful and grateful to be able to share this post with them.
