Gratefulness is the Key – Guest Posting by Brooklyn

Gratefulness is Key

GratefulThe scent of Christmas was in the air. Carols were loudly playing on the living room TV and colorful lights were hung up all around the house. I sat happily next to my two siblings, in front of the towering Christmas tree which held ornaments that my mother had received at ornament exchanges with her small groups. My heart was thumping wildly in my chest, threatening to burst out of my thin frame. Christmas only happened once a year and it was always the most exciting time. I always got to see relatives I didn’t see very much, I got to drink eggnog and make snowmen. But to me, the best part of Christmas was tearing the sparkly wrapping paper from boxes which held presents for me.

Soon a large box sat in my lap and I fingered the red bow on the top. My mom, who likes all of the kids to open the presents at the same time, announced that we could open our first present. So I tore off the blue penguin paper and reached inside to reveal a plush doll. I glanced over to see what my sister had received. In her hands was an adorable stuffed bear. Jealousy bubbled ferociously through me as I threw my doll to the ground. Why did my younger sister get something so much better than me? I planned to ask to trade her my doll for her stuffie.  She was young so she would probably absent mindedly give the stuffed animal to me if I played my part right.

What I didn’t know was my doll was the type of doll that you could register onto the computer and play games with it and buy it clothes.  I felt so dumb; acting like my life was over because I was envious of something my sister got. The doll was an awesome gift that I loved to death and used a lot.

I was foolish to be jealous of what my younger sister had gotten, when I had gotten an awesome gift too. I should’ve been grateful for what I had received. In fact, I should’ve been happy for my sister who had, in the end, shared with me because she saw how I admired her stuffed animal.

Next time you are jealous of something your neighbor (or sister in my case) has, remember that you are blessed and be grateful for what you have. The tenth commandment, which is found in Exodus chapter 20, says “Do not covet your neighbor’s house.” Meaning, don’t be jealous of what your neighbors own but be grateful.

Hope you enjoyed my story!

jesus-our-friend1Jesus Our Friend

He gave us Christmas gifts, which only some of us have opened- His friendship and love. He experienced being a human and how much we needed a Savior. We also needed to be loved and we all need a friend.

You couldn’t have a better friend. He listens when you talk, encourages you when you need encouraging and He forgives your every fault. Jesus loves you as a friend and wants the best for you. There is no jealousy in Him.

You will never be alone on Christmas. He is with you every step of the way.

Enter more deeply into the friendship you have with Jesus and celebrate this Christmas season.

So remember while December

Brings the only Christmas day,

In the year let there be Christmas

In the things you do and say.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.” Isaiah 9:6-7

Not this Year

pen_paperIt was close, but Journey Thoughts and Word Salt fell short of the top prize at the 2012 Canadian Blog Awards.  I congratulate the winners and I thank all those who voted for my blogs over the past two months.  As they say, “There is always next year.”

For a complete list of winners and stats, please go to this website: http://cdnba.wordpress.com/2012/12/03/the-final-results-for-the-2012-canadian-blog-awards/

That said, I have been teaching some brilliant young writers this past term and I hope to have a sampling of their work on Journey Thoughts over the next few weeks.  Their assignment is to write a Christmas Devotional (between 250 – 500 words in length), which is asking a lot from these prolific writers.  All nine of them just participated in the NaNoWriMo challenge during the month of November (National Novel Writing Month) and they all exceeded our class word count goals!  One student even wrote over 50,000 words!  So to keep these young people to writing short devotional essays, may be a challenge all on its own.

I tell my students that “writing is the thing”.  Yes, we focus on the mechanics of writing: spelling, punctuation and grammar – but for the most part, we strive for putting our thoughts, our stories onto paper and glorifying God because He is the One that gave each of us the talents and gifts to use the written word to touch lives.  So, to those who faithfully read my little blog, please make a point of reading and encouraging my students over the next few weeks as they showcase their talents here on Journey Thoughts.  I know you will be blessed!
