My Baby’s Growing Up!

Special DaughterMy grandbaby, Jaxon calls me “Ga!” because he has, up until recently, been unable to make his little mouth form “r’s”.  He calls my husband, “GaPa!” for the same reason.  The other day I visited with him and he actually said, “GaMa!” and although delighted that he recognizes me with such excitement, I’m still a little sad that his days of calling me “Ga” are numbered now.  I asked him how old he would be in a couple of weeks and he said, “Fwee!”  I laughed because he was so cute saying it but also because he’s not turning “fwee”, he’s turning two!  Children always like to think of themselves older than they are.

My “baby” girl, Carmen is going to be graduating at the end of May and she wasn’t too excited about it all until very recently…perhaps knowing she might have a date to take her to the banquet, has much to do with this new-found excitement…

Anyway, I had a hard enough time when she got her learner’s permit and then her license.  It just seemed soooo surrealistic to see my baby driving a car!  How did that happen?  One day she’s playing with Polly Pocket dolls and the next she’s driving to Tim Horton’s to get an Ice Cap coffee.  Well…I guess not the NEXT day…it was probably years later…still… for a parent it seemed like it happened overnight.

This week, she’s having her grad pictures taken.  The students are supposed to bring something that represents their personality to pose with…Carmen has chosen a giant Pikachu.  God bless her!  Hope she always stays a child at heart!  I vetoed the footies though.

Tonight we’re going shopping for a grad gown.  I can almost feel the tears start to well up, just thinking that my baby will soon be done high school and like her two siblings before her, she’ll be making some serious life decisions and the days of dolls, footies and Pikachu will be relegated to the past.  I want to be excited for her, and I am, but I’m also a little sad.  My baby’s growing up.

I know it’s the next season of life for her, but my mother’s heart is aching for the days passed.  I am NOT looking forward to being an empty-nester…no matter what the commercials say about embracing Freedom Fifty!    Why do I feel such an emotional tug on my heart-strings when my kidlings reach another significant life milestone?  Why can’t Jaxon just keep calling me “Ga”, why can’t Carmen just keep playing with Polly Pocket dolls?  I should embrace their accomplishments but as I scan websites in search of the perfect grad gown, all I think about is…my baby girl is growing up…and I’m sad.

Thankfully this morning, the Lord brought this scripture to mind: “that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”  (Philippians 1:6)  I have tried to “train her up” the best I know how, and now God is asking me to let go and let Him direct her to follow the path He has always had in mind for her life.  God is in control.  Thank you, Lord, for Your Word today.

No more Pennies from Heaven…

I know they were a nuisance to carry around for the most part.  I know they cost the Canadian government a penny and a half just to make them.  I know that jars were usually filled to the brim with them, or in little trays at the front counters of stores with a sign that said, “Take a penny, leave a penny.”  Coin purses were filled with them, or found at the bottom of wishing wells…and yes, I, like every child before me, swallowed one at least once in their lifetime.

The demise of the Canadian penny is today…and I’m a little sad.

I remember when a penny would get you five “penny candies” in the early 60’s.  I remember if I had ten pennies in my hand as a little girl I felt rich!  I remember learning how to count toLast Penny ten using pennies!  I remember thinking how wonderful it would be if pennies DID rain down from heaven.  But no more.

Even though the one dollar and then the two dollar bill, were replaced by the heavy looney and toonie, as they are affectionately referred to here in Canada, the common penny will not be replaced.  Merchants will have to round up or down to the nearest nickel when we buy anything that requires paying with a few pennies.  The extinction of the penny will also lead to some of my most favourite sayings and penny related items biting the dust, or searching for a new name at least…

No more “penny whistles”… “nickle whistles” just doesn’t have the same ring to it…

No more reference to “penny weights”…120th of a Troy ounce used by jewellers to measure precious metals…

I can no longer be a “penny-pincher” because I like to “pinch pennies”…

No more can we say that cost a “pretty penny” or “a penny saved is a penny earned”…

I won’t be able to “rub two pennies together” anymore…

What about “penny ante poker”?…

And lastly there will be no more “pennies for your thoughts”.

Now all we’ll be able to do is “nickel and dime” things to death.

I’ve put in my “two cents” worth.  Take it or leave it.

Shadow Dancing

I don’t know about you but there’s something about “Groundhog Day” that just brings out the kid in me.  I find it strangely bizarre, yet equally fascinating to watch while some rodents are pulled from their warm dens in front of crowds of people only to “whisper” to their handlers whether or not there will or will not be six more weeks of winter.  And how do they come to this amazing prediction?  It all has to do with whether or not the furry prognosticator has seen his shadow.  Apparently if they see their shadow (meaning it’s sunny outside), the little varmint gets startled and chooses to hibernate for six more weeks, meaning six more weeks of winter.  However if he does not see his shadow, (it’s overcast outside), then he’ll venture out and the theory is we’ll have an early spring.  According to records, their predictions are 39% reliable most years 🙂

The holiday, which began as a Pennsylvania German custom in southeastern and central Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries, has its origins in ancient European weather lore, wherein a badger or sacred bear is the prognosticator as opposed to a groundhog.   The holiday also bears some similarities to the medieval Catholic holiday of Candlemas.  It also bears similarities to the Pagan festival of  Imbolc, the seasonal turning point of the Celtic calendar, which is celebrated on February 1 and also involves weather prognostication, and to St. Swithun’s Day in July.

The largest Groundhog Day celebration is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where crowds as large as 40,000 have gathered to celebrate the holiday since at least 1886.  Other celebrations of note in Pennsylvania take place in Quarryville in Lancaster County, the Anthracite Region of Schuylkill County, the Sinnamahoning Valley and Bucks County.

Outside of Pennsylvania, notable celebrations occur in the Frederick and Hagerstown areas of Maryland, the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Woodstock, Illinois, Lilburn, Georgia and among the Amish populations of over twenty states and at Wiarton, Ontario and Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia in Canada.  ( info. from Wikepedia)

Here in Alberta our buck toothed prognosticator is the famous “Balzac Billy“.   Granted Balzac Billy is a man dressed up in a cute mascot suit because as all Albertans understand only too well that in most years, no gopher in his right mind would pop his little head out of his warm burrow here in Alberta the second day of February.  No, our Albertan gophers know better than to appear above ground until the first day of Spring, (March 20 or 21st) when the frost is out of the ground…sort of…and the Chinook winds have melted the snow away.  Doesn’t matter whether or not their prognosticating cousins in Ontario or Nova Scotia predicted six weeks more or less of winter by mid March the Albertan groundhogs could not care less if they see their shadow or not…they’re just itching to get out of the hole and find some food!  (It’s also interesting that it’s exactly around that time that there suddenly appears in the sky an abundance of hawks, eagles and owls.) Nature is just full of checks and balances!

So while I anxiously await the furry weatherman’s prediction today, I’m also watching the skies…

Do I see a hawk flying overhead?  Run Billy run!
