Because He Lives

“Because He Lives, I can face tomorrow…”  I think these are my most favorite lyrics ever written.  The whole song written by Bill and Gloria Gaither brings me to tears every time; the truth of those words impact me profoundly whenever I hear or sing them because they ring TRUE!

There is so much theological truth wrapped up in those seven words!

The fact that Jesus Christ will never leave me or forsake me,

He is Sovereign,

He is in control,

It’s not about me, it’s all about Him,

Were it not for His Grace, His Mercy, His Love, I would be undone.

I would have no future here in this world or in the next…

The world is a frightening place now if you listen to the news.  Hatred abounds.  Yet I can declare with certainty that “Because He Lives, I can face tomorrow…”  There should be no fear if we are followers of Christ.

More than ever, I feel emboldened to share the Gospel with those who do not have that surety of eternal life.  I want to reach out to those who live without the Hope that only Christ can give them.  I beseech my readers to share this post with their friends and family.  Click on the link here: The Gospel Message .  Be bold in your own witness with those who are overwhelmed with world events right now.  Comfort those who are going through trials of every kind.  Share with them that God is in control.  Don’t lose heart and never forget that “Because He Lives, (You) can face tomorrow…”

“Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.”  John 14:19

Lake Life

We have recently returned from our yearly trip to the lake with all the children and grandchildren gathered around us for a week of swimming, sunbathing and camping frivolity that will once again leave us with precious memories that will last a lifetime!  For our family, the time we spend together at the lake is the highlight of our entire year.  My kids were only youngsters when we first came to the lake and now they are coming with their spouses and children.  Sometimes I wonder who is more excited to be at the lake, my kids, my grandchildren or me!  It seems we spend so much time preparing for that week together each year, counting down the months, weeks, days and hours until we are all parked, unpacked, set up, and ready to relax.  It’s ironic that we must “hurry up to do nothing” as my husband says.

One of my favorite things to do at the lake is to get up before anyone else and observe the campsite waking up.  “Gustaff”, the duck, waddles past looking for some handouts.  We’re not supposed to feed the quacker but he still makes his early morning round hopeful that someone will ignore the rules.  The crows begin their morning conference call, and the blue heron sweeps into the lake grabbing a little bass fish for breakfast.  An RV neighbour walks by me with his dog on a leash.  He whispers, “Good morning” and disappears along the trail around the lake.  The rising sun continues to spur movement at each campsite, as it radiates a warm greeting to those awake and those still trying to get in a few more minutes of slumber.  I hear tent flaps zip open, the occupants yawning as they emerge from their canvas cocoons.  The smell of coffee and bacon starts to waft through the air; I am already looking forward to the pancakes my husband will prepare for our clan.

It is my morning routine, as the campsite comes to life, to have my quiet time, read in my Bible, write in my journal, and pray.  There are times at home, I will admit, that I struggle to focus and immerse myself in the Word as completely as I do here.  It’s like I am entangled by my surroundings at home; my worries, daily schedule, and timely constraints that always seem to interfere with my attention to fully hear and comprehend His Words of wisdom.  However, my time with Jesus here is unlike anything I experience at home.  Not only does He allow me to connect with my family, storing up memories to look back on throughout the year, but I reconnect with Him as He teaches me, like He did so often with His followers by the lakeside, so that my spirit is renewed, and my senses are more attuned to His Creation around me.  He beckons me to lay aside the troubles that I have somehow packed up with me to bring to the lake.  This is no place for worrisome baggage from home.  He embraces me with that peace that surpasses understanding.  I sit under the canopy of weeping willows and maple trees and praise Him for allowing me this time of rest and relaxation that my body and soul so desperately needs.

“Grandma, are you awake yet?”  My grandson runs across the road from the cabin he is sharing with his mom, dad and sister.  He leaps onto my lap, interrupting the peace but causing my heart to leap with joy.

“I am!”  I hug him tight.  “This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!”

“I guess.” He laughs and then grins at me mischievously, “Now, let’s go feed Gustaff!”

I Swear…*NOT!*

As an educator, a Mom and a grandmother, I like to stay up on all the “buzz” going on in Hollywood and in the entertainment industry because, let’s face it, we’d be sticking our heads in the sand if we didn’t think our kids and grandkids are influenced by what they see on T.V., the movies and the music they listen to.  As a parent it is my responsibility to give wise counsel if I think my kids are watching or listening to something that to me may seem inappropriate or contrary to their Christian upbringing.  I am NOT a censor.  Let me make that clear.  I do not outright ban content my kids are exposed to in the media.  Instead I try to create learning opportunities and we have had several teachable moments through the years discussing the merits or foibles of some T.V., movies and music they like.

When my son was fourteen, he came home with a CD that he had purchased with his own money.  He had heard the band on the radio and really liked one of their songs.  On the way home from the store he asked me if we could listen to the album in the car.  (My kids know that I like to “preview” their movies and music, even if the content may not be to my liking…I still listen politely… even if I still don’t get “Screamo” music.)  Within fifteen seconds of popping that CD into the player, we had already heard three “F” bombs dropped in the first song’s lyrics.  My son looked at me a little guiltily and then he ejected the CD hastily.  At home we looked at the album cover and in almost miniscule printing on the back label was the warning: “Explicit Lyrics”.  My son had spent his hard-earned allowance on that CD and what I did next made a huge impression on him.  I calmly went to the drawer and cut the CD in half with some scissors.  Wide-eyed he gasped, “Mom!  I could have taken it back to the store and got my money back!”  I again very calmly said, “Would you want some other kid buying this album?  It’s better we just get rid of it and not let it be sold to another kid.”  Amazingly, my son did not argue and I never had to cut another CD in half again.

Now, I know my kids, now as adults, have spent money on questionable movies, CD’s and the like.  If truth be told, it is nearly impossible nowadays to avoid renting a movie, or watching a show on T.V. or even listening to music, where offensive material is not present.  In fact, I heard a report that many of the Hollywood Award shows have obscenities actually “scripted in” to the programs because vulgarity will quickly ensure the program will be watched (if not that night, on the internet after the fact) and would give more notoriety to the stars who swear as they give their “thank-yous”.  I am rather shocked that with the same breath a star says “Thank-you” to friends and family (and even God) for their success, they also lace their acceptance speech with foul words.  Does anyone else see something wrong with this picture?

The other day I was at the mall with my grandchildren and a group of young teenaged girls walked past us.  Their giggling conversation was an assault to my ears as they used every known obscenity, in what I can only assume was in their limited vocabulary, to talk to each other.  I wanted to cover my grandson’s ears so he wasn’t exposed to those words.  I glared at the girls but they didn’t even seem to notice.

Several years ago we celebrated my son’s graduation and hosted his after grad party in our home.  What impressed me maybe even more than 50 young men and women not drinking alcohol that night, preferring to have a Dry Grad celebration instead, was the fact that I did not hear one swear word all evening.  They spoke to one another with respect, even if there was a lot of teasing and joking especially during a heated game of Dutch Blitz!  I couldn’t help but think that they take the scripture from Ephesians seriously: “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”  (Eph. 4:29-30)

The entertainment industry would do well to take that scripture seriously too…but will they?
