25 Encouraging Bible Verses for Valentine’s Day

For some Valentine’s Day is not a great day to celebrate.  We have a number of “singles” in our church and several “widowers” as well and Valentine’s Day seems to focus on “couples”.  For many the day just brings back memories of loved ones gone on, or being terribly alone on a day that is supposed to celebrate LOVE…

So today, for those who are indeed celebrating the day with that special “someone”, or are struggling through the day by themselves, I hope these scriptures will encourage you and focus you on the One Who loves you more deeply and honestly than anyone else could.

1.  “So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.”  Genesis 29:20

2.  “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”  Psalms 37:4

3.  “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor:  If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.  But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”  Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

4.  “Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth— for your love is more delightful than wine.”  Song of Songs 1:2

My Baby’s Growing Up!

Special DaughterMy grandbaby, Jaxon calls me “Ga!” because he has, up until recently, been unable to make his little mouth form “r’s”.  He calls my husband, “GaPa!” for the same reason.  The other day I visited with him and he actually said, “GaMa!” and although delighted that he recognizes me with such excitement, I’m still a little sad that his days of calling me “Ga” are numbered now.  I asked him how old he would be in a couple of weeks and he said, “Fwee!”  I laughed because he was so cute saying it but also because he’s not turning “fwee”, he’s turning two!  Children always like to think of themselves older than they are.

My “baby” girl, Carmen is going to be graduating at the end of May and she wasn’t too excited about it all until very recently…perhaps knowing she might have a date to take her to the banquet, has much to do with this new-found excitement…

Anyway, I had a hard enough time when she got her learner’s permit and then her license.  It just seemed soooo surrealistic to see my baby driving a car!  How did that happen?  One day she’s playing with Polly Pocket dolls and the next she’s driving to Tim Horton’s to get an Ice Cap coffee.  Well…I guess not the NEXT day…it was probably years later…still… for a parent it seemed like it happened overnight.

This week, she’s having her grad pictures taken.  The students are supposed to bring something that represents their personality to pose with…Carmen has chosen a giant Pikachu.  God bless her!  Hope she always stays a child at heart!  I vetoed the footies though.

Tonight we’re going shopping for a grad gown.  I can almost feel the tears start to well up, just thinking that my baby will soon be done high school and like her two siblings before her, she’ll be making some serious life decisions and the days of dolls, footies and Pikachu will be relegated to the past.  I want to be excited for her, and I am, but I’m also a little sad.  My baby’s growing up.

I know it’s the next season of life for her, but my mother’s heart is aching for the days passed.  I am NOT looking forward to being an empty-nester…no matter what the commercials say about embracing Freedom Fifty!    Why do I feel such an emotional tug on my heart-strings when my kidlings reach another significant life milestone?  Why can’t Jaxon just keep calling me “Ga”, why can’t Carmen just keep playing with Polly Pocket dolls?  I should embrace their accomplishments but as I scan websites in search of the perfect grad gown, all I think about is…my baby girl is growing up…and I’m sad.

Thankfully this morning, the Lord brought this scripture to mind: “that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”  (Philippians 1:6)  I have tried to “train her up” the best I know how, and now God is asking me to let go and let Him direct her to follow the path He has always had in mind for her life.  God is in control.  Thank you, Lord, for Your Word today.

No more Pennies from Heaven…

I know they were a nuisance to carry around for the most part.  I know they cost the Canadian government a penny and a half just to make them.  I know that jars were usually filled to the brim with them, or in little trays at the front counters of stores with a sign that said, “Take a penny, leave a penny.”  Coin purses were filled with them, or found at the bottom of wishing wells…and yes, I, like every child before me, swallowed one at least once in their lifetime.

The demise of the Canadian penny is today…and I’m a little sad.

I remember when a penny would get you five “penny candies” in the early 60’s.  I remember if I had ten pennies in my hand as a little girl I felt rich!  I remember learning how to count toLast Penny ten using pennies!  I remember thinking how wonderful it would be if pennies DID rain down from heaven.  But no more.

Even though the one dollar and then the two dollar bill, were replaced by the heavy looney and toonie, as they are affectionately referred to here in Canada, the common penny will not be replaced.  Merchants will have to round up or down to the nearest nickel when we buy anything that requires paying with a few pennies.  The extinction of the penny will also lead to some of my most favourite sayings and penny related items biting the dust, or searching for a new name at least…

No more “penny whistles”… “nickle whistles” just doesn’t have the same ring to it…

No more reference to “penny weights”…120th of a Troy ounce used by jewellers to measure precious metals…

I can no longer be a “penny-pincher” because I like to “pinch pennies”…

No more can we say that cost a “pretty penny” or “a penny saved is a penny earned”…

I won’t be able to “rub two pennies together” anymore…

What about “penny ante poker”?…

And lastly there will be no more “pennies for your thoughts”.

Now all we’ll be able to do is “nickel and dime” things to death.

I’ve put in my “two cents” worth.  Take it or leave it.
